The NBA season has not tipped off, and prediction markets have already narrowed the title race to two teams. As of September 21, 2026, the Oklahoma City Thunder trade at 21.5¢ on both Polymarket and Kalshi to win the 2027 championship, and the San Antonio Spurs sit at 20.5¢ on Polymarket and 21–22¢ on Kalshi. The defending champion New York Knicks are a distant third at 11.5¢ on Polymarket and just 8–9¢ on Kalshi.
Those NBA championship odds for 2027 reflect the last two Finals. The Thunder won the 2025 title in seven games against the Indiana Pacers. The Spurs reached the 2026 Finals and lost 4–1 to the Knicks, who won their first championship since 1973. The market is betting that the two teams with the deepest young cores are the likeliest to meet again — and that New York's run was the exception rather than the new order.
Below is the full board, how prices have held through the offseason, where the two venues disagree, and what an NBA futures contract actually costs over a nine-month hold.

Thunder and Spurs: A Two-Team Market at the Top
Together, Oklahoma City and San Antonio account for about 42% of the probability in the market, and the next team is nine points behind them. That is an unusually top-heavy board for September. In most seasons the favourite trades in the mid-teens; this year the market has two teams above 20%.
The Thunder's case is a proven core. They won the 2025 title, and the market treats their failure to defend the title in 2026 as a stumble rather than a decline. Their price has barely moved all offseason: 21.5¢ on Polymarket throughout September, with Kalshi's midpoint easing slightly from 22.5¢ to 21.5¢. The Spurs' case is trajectory. A team that reached the Finals with a young roster built around Victor Wembanyama is priced to get better, and Kalshi's traders rate San Antonio level with Oklahoma City.
What the prices mean in money: $100 on the Thunder at 21.5¢ buys about 465 contracts, paying $465 if they win in June 2027. A one-in-five favourite still loses four seasons in five. Our expected value guide explains how to judge whether a price like this is worth paying.
The Knicks Are Defending Champions at 11.5%
New York beat San Antonio 4–1 in the 2026 Finals, which ran from June 3 to June 13, with Jalen Brunson a unanimous Finals MVP. It was the franchise's third championship and its first in 53 years. The market's response is striking: the champions are priced at barely half the Spurs team they beat.
The venues disagree more on the Knicks than on any other contender. Polymarket prices them at 11.5¢, Kalshi at 8–9¢ — a three-point gap, and roughly a third more implied probability on Polymarket. If you want the Knicks, Kalshi is the cheaper place to buy them; if you think they are overrated, selling on Polymarket is the better trade. Our Polymarket vs Kalshi comparison explains why the two books drift apart.
History supports the sceptics. No NBA team has won back-to-back titles since the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018. The eight champions since then have been eight different teams: Toronto, the Lakers, Milwaukee, Golden State, Denver, Boston, Oklahoma City and New York. A defending champion at 8–11% is priced about where that record suggests.
The Rest of the Contenders
The Philadelphia 76ers are the market's fourth choice at 11.2¢ on Polymarket, level with the Knicks, though Kalshi prices them lower at 9–10¢. Their Polymarket price has eased from 12.7¢ at the start of September. Minnesota is the only other team above 5¢, and its price has been the most active in the market, rising from 4.2¢ to 5.1¢ after touching 6.8¢ on September 14.
Two smaller gaps are worth knowing. Miami trades at 3¢ on Polymarket but 4–5¢ on Kalshi, so Heat backers should buy on Polymarket. Detroit shows the opposite: 2.9¢ on Polymarket against 1–2¢ on Kalshi, which makes Kalshi the place to buy the Pistons. Gaps of one or two points look trivial, but on contracts this cheap they are 30–50% differences in price.
Below that, the board is a long list of teams between 1¢ and 3¢. The Boston Celtics, champions in 2024, sit at 4.5¢. The Los Angeles Lakers trade under 2¢ on Polymarket. At those prices the favourite–longshot bias applies: cheap futures across betting markets tend to be overpriced, and our vig guide explains how the built-in margin concentrates in the long shots.

| Philadelphia 76ers | 9.5¢ | 9.5¢ | 8.5¢ – 10.5¢ |

Kalshi midpoints from PredictReport's tracker. Compare this with the NFL, where the Super Bowl market has seen five-point swings in a fortnight. NBA futures in September are quiet because nothing is happening: rosters are mostly set, and there are no games to react to. The first real repricing arrives with the opening weeks of the season in late October, and the second around the February trade deadline. The live page shows today's prices.
Polymarket vs Kalshi on NBA Futures
Kalshi has traded about 29 million contracts on this market; Polymarket about $22 million. Both are deep enough for retail-sized orders on the leading teams.
The difference is the cost of the long shots. Buy one contract on every team at the ask, and Polymarket charges about $1.053 for a $1 payout, an overround of 5.3%. Kalshi charges about $1.14, an overround of 14%. Almost all of that gap is in teams priced below 3¢, where Kalshi's quotes often sit at a 1¢ bid and 2¢ or 3¢ ask regardless of the contract's real value. For a long shot, that minimum spread is a large tax.
| If you want | Cheaper venue on Sept 21 | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Knicks | Kalshi | 8–9¢ vs 11.5¢ |
| 76ers | Kalshi | 9–10¢ vs 11.2¢ |
| Pistons | Kalshi | 1–2¢ vs 2.9¢ |
| Heat | Polymarket | 3.0¢ vs 4–5¢ |
| Spurs | Polymarket | 20.5¢ vs 21–22¢ |
| Most teams under 2¢ | Polymarket | No 1¢ minimum spread |
None of these gaps is currently an arbitrage. Our arbitrage scanner nets out fees and requires executable prices on both venues, and nothing in this market clears that bar today. That changes quickly once games start and prices move at different speeds on the two venues. Our arbitrage guide explains how to trade those gaps when they open.
How Prediction Market NBA Odds Compare With Sportsbooks
A sportsbook futures board for the NBA adds its margin to every team, and on long-dated markets that margin is large, because the book carries the risk of a big bet for nine months. The result is that a team the market rates at 21.5% is usually offered at shorter odds than +365 at a sportsbook, and the gap widens the further down the board you go.
Prediction markets remove the house. The price is set by traders on both sides, and the only margin is whatever spread and fee remain after competition. On the Thunder and Spurs, both venues are within a cent of each other, which is about as tight as futures pricing gets. The difference matters most for the bettor who wants a long shot: paying 1.8¢ for the Pacers on Polymarket, rather than a sportsbook price with its margin baked in, is a meaningful improvement over a full season of futures bets.
There is also a structural difference. A sportsbook can limit or close accounts that win consistently; an exchange makes the same fee whoever wins. Our comparison of prediction markets and sports betting covers both points in detail, and our cost maths breakdown puts numbers on the margin difference.
Why an NBA Futures Contract Is a Nine-Month Hold
A championship contract bought today settles after the 2027 Finals in June. That is about nine months of capital sitting in a position that pays nothing until the end.
The opportunity cost is real. Kalshi pays roughly 4% a year on idle cash, so nine months of a position forgoes about 3% of the stake. For a contract you expect to be mispriced by a few points, that cost can erase the edge. Polymarket pays nothing on balances either way, so the comparison there is simpler. Our Kalshi review explains how the interest programme works.
The path matters too. An NBA champion has to survive an 82-game season, injuries, and four best-of-seven playoff rounds. Best-of-seven series favour the better team more than single games do, which is why NBA favourites are priced higher than NFL favourites. Even so, a 21% favourite needs luck with health, and injuries are the single biggest source of repricing in NBA futures.
That is the case for trading the season rather than holding to the end. Futures prices move with every injury report and trade rumour, and a contract bought at 3¢ that climbs to 10¢ by February has already delivered most of its value. Our guide to cashing out early explains when selling beats holding.
A practical way to manage a season of NBA futures is to decide in advance what would make you sell: a price target, an injury to a key player, or the trade deadline passing without the move you expected. Writing those triggers down before the season starts keeps the decision about the contract rather than about how you feel on a given night. Our roundup of free prediction market tools covers the price comparison, calculators and journal that make that routine easy to keep.
How the NBA Championship Market Resolves
The contract pays $1 on the team that wins the 2027 NBA Finals and $0 on every other team. It does not settle on conference titles or regular-season records. Kalshi's close date for the market sits well beyond June 2027, which is a standard backstop rather than an expected settlement date; contracts settle once the Finals end.
The edge cases are rare in basketball but worth reading about once. Each venue's rulebook names its source and covers what happens if the season is suspended or shortened, which happened in 2020. Our explainer on how prediction markets resolve covers what to look for.
How to Trade NBA Championship Odds
For US traders, Kalshi is the regulated default for sports, with dollars in and out and deep NBA books; our ranking of the best prediction markets for sports betting compares it with the alternatives. Polymarket offers tighter pricing on long shots and settles in USDC. If you are choosing a venue for the first time, our ranking of the best prediction market apps covers every option, and how prediction markets work explains the mechanics.
Use limit orders on anything below 5¢, where the spread is a large share of the price — our guide to limit orders explains why. Kalshi's fee is 0.07 × contracts × price × (1 − price), so 100 Thunder contracts at 22¢ cost about $1.21 in fees; our market fee calculator runs any combination.
Sports contracts face legal challenges in several states, so check our state-by-state legal map before trading. Profits are taxable when realised, and Kalshi issues a 1099-MISC — see our prediction market tax guide.
